The mini and the new 10th gen do not have a headphone jack, which for my child is a vital. Depending how your kiddo uses it it may be a factor or not. It's downfall is the battery compared to the base 6th gen, it is not as long. Here is my take on this, I love my Mini it is a beast, is fast, crazy portable, plus handles all I throw at it. Now let me explain, I have a 6th gen Mini and gave my 6th gen base iPad to my kid around the same age as yours to replace the iPad Air 1st gen (a hand me down when I got the 6th gen). My vote is neither, and say the 9th generation iPad for the win.
